Ankle Sprain
An ankle sprain is a very common injuries and it involves the stretch or tear (partial or complete) of the ligaments of the ankle. The most common type of sprain is called a Lateral Ankle Sprain which happens due to rolling of the foot outwards (to Inversion) during activities such as running, jumping-landing, changing direction, or even with normal walking.
Acute Symptoms will often include pain, swelling, bruising, difficulty with weight bearing, limited range of movement and reduced strength. It is extremely important to see a Physio that will conduct a thorough clinical assessment to determine the grade of the injury, if there is a need for imaging to rule out a fracture and to discuss the recommended management to allow for full recovery and safe return to sport / other activities.
Ankle sprain is often considered as a “simple” injury, however, it could have long term implications, with uo to 70% patients reporting persistent residual symptoms and injury recurrence.
